Youth Advisory Council puts leadership into action with hospital visit

Members of JCP Youth’s Youth Advisory Council chose to visit a young person at the Royal Hobart Hospital, bringing gifts, company and their barber skills.

Members of JCP Youth’s Youth Advisory Council have shown what community-minded leadership can look like through a voluntary visit to a young person at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

The council members brought gifts, spent time together and put their barber skills to work during the weekend visit. Their decision to attend was their own: there was no requirement for them to be there.

For JCP Youth, the visit offered a meaningful example of the leadership, character and responsibility discussed across its programs becoming visible through young people’s choices and actions.

A community where young people belong

In sharing the visit on 30 August, JCP Youth put belonging at the centre of the story:

“One of the most important things we can give a young person is a community where they know they belong.”

The council members’ contribution was practical and personal. Gifts, time spent together and a willingness to share their skills were ways of showing another young person that they mattered to the people around them.

Leadership in everyday decisions

JCP Youth explores leadership and character through its work in schools, camps and outdoor adventures, and through its Kaleido and BEAST programs. Across these settings, young people are encouraged to consider their responsibility to others and how their actions affect the people around them.

The hospital visit gave those ideas an everyday expression. JCP Youth’s reflection focused on what young people choose to do when nobody is asking them to demonstrate a lesson or take on a task.

Leadership can include speaking to a room or making a difficult decision. The council members showed another way to contribute: being present, offering what they could and making time for a fellow young person.
